Question by rfs: Electrical outlet – top socket failed, bottom socket still live. Safe?
I was listening to my old Bose clock radio and was changing volume/stations when it suddenly went dead. Its power was out. But I moved the plug to the bottom socket (standard 2 sockets total), and it was live and worked just fine. Plug in a lamp, same thing – top socket dead, bottom socket okay. Therefore it is a problem with the socket on top.
Why would the top plug socket fail suddenly, but the bottom socket is still fine? Do I need to do anything about this, or is it safe to ignore it and just “plug in somewhere else?” (cost: it’s $ 40+ to get an electrician out here. Safety: is there a short or a fire hazard?)
How do I fix this? I’m just brave enough to unscrew the front plate! I don’t own a voltmeter. Also concerned about safety of “doing nothing” about this.

Don’t let the bad outlet stay like it is, as it might cause more problems Just change the outlet yourself. Turn of the power at the fuse box or breaker panel before you do it. The folks at the hardware store should be able to advise you which type you need. A screwdriver, a pair of pliers, and a few minutes and you’ll have the job done.
